Have you booked your first holiday of 2018? Are you needing some inspiration? There are so many magical adventures to be had around the world, whether you’re hiking up mountains or enjoying local culinary delights. What people like to enjoy and what’s on offer seems to change over time, so we’re looking ahead to some of the travel trends that are going to be big this year.

Going solo!

Perhaps it’s being able to enjoy a holiday however you like or just testing your independence – either way, the popularity of solo adventures abroad is growing fast. Travel companies are also adjusting to this upward trend, with a number of companies beginning to offer packages for single travellers. That could mean fewer single supplement fees and more trips geared to solo tourists! Companies like Intrepid Travel have a range of holidays for individual holidaymakers.

Being savvy about sustainability

Many holidaymakers are thinking about the ways that they can be a little bit kinder to the world around them while travelling. That’s why eco-tourism has been on the rise in recent years. Responsible tourism businesses offer attractions and activities that might be safe for local wildlife, good for the local economy and low-impact on the environment. For example, companies like Jacada Travel support various community and environmental initiatives in the destinations they offer trips to.

Active adventures…

From hiking in the Himalayas to diving with sharks, many tourists will be looking for all sorts of magical and thrilling adventures abroad during 2018. Hiking and trekking are likely to be particularly popular pursuits as they allow tourists to experience local cultures, nature and to keep active. Not only are these activities great for getting exercise while on holiday, they can be exciting things to tick off the bucket list! G Adventures are one of a number of companies offering adventure holidays and tours.

Water lot of ways to cruise!

An increasingly popular way to travel is away from dry land! According to the ABTA Travel Trends Report 2018, 14% of UK holidaymakers are planning to go on a cruise during 2018 – which is double the amount from the previous year. While people often picture cruises as days of relaxing on deck, many holidays of this nature are becoming more active and may include such pastimes as hiking, rock climbing or yoga! River cruises in Europe, such as those offered by Uniworld, could prove to be particularly popular.

Destination unknown…

While some of the more popular holiday destinations feel the squeeze of over-tourism, many people are starting to explore locations they might not have considered before. ABTA’s Travel Trends Report 2018 found that 27% of tourists are thinking of travelling to a country they haven’t visited previously and 32% might go to a new city or resort. Lesser-visited destinations that may well see an increase in visitors in 2018 include countries like Moldova and Belarus.
