The UK has a long, storied history with horse racing, with plenty of the country’s race meetings dating back hundreds of years. The Grand National

We’re starting with the biggest of them all! Millions of people all over the world have eyes on this 40-horse race. First hosted in 1839, this Aintree-based event is always a thrilling race.

Royal Ascot

Britain’s most valuable race meeting, the Royal Ascot offers £6.5million in prize money, attracting top racers from around the world! Epsom Derby

Known as Britain’s richest race, the Epsom Derby was first hosted in 1780! It’s arguably the most prestigious of the five British Classics, and said to be the most important British flat race. Horse racing isn’t the only entertainment though, and modern festivals include celebrity DJ after parties, fairground rides and even skydivers!

First event: 1780

Cheltenham Festival

Often referred to as the home of jump racing, and voted The Greatest Racecourse in the World by The Racing Post, racing at Cheltenham dates back over 200 years to 1815. With a huge prize pool of over £4.5million, you’ll see some of the finest horse racing in the country at Cheltenham.

Doncaster St Leger

The oldest of the five British Classics, and the oldest classic race in the world! The St Leger at Doncaster dates all the way back to 1776, but wasn’t given its famous name until 1778. It still attracts great crowds, and closes out the flat racing season each year!

Kiplingcotes Derby

The Kiplingcotes Derby is the oldest race event in the UK, and unlike any other on this list! Under the ancient rules, the 500-year-old race must take place every year or it can never be run again! This four-mile cross country race in the East Riding of Yorkshire is a unique experience and a living piece of British racing history.

First event: 1519
