It’s almost summer! While our weather might be typically erratic, hop across the channel and you’ll find plenty of warmer destinations within reach. What’s more, if you’ve got a touring caravan, the possibilities are almost endless! Forget the stress, inflexibility and inevitable delays of tedious flights. Instead, link up your caravan, get behind the wheel and just drive in whichever direction you fancy! Not only does mainland Europe have almost anything you could desire in terms of surroundings and scenery, it’s also a heaving hotbed of campsites and caravan parks. But if you’d like a little guidance on where to head, check out our ideas for gorgeous places to set a waypoint on your magical voyage.
Lake Maggiore, Switzerland/Italy
Nestled amongst the Alps near the borders of Switzerland and Italy are the Italian lakes, of which Maggiore is the second biggest. A huge, sea-like body of water, Maggiore is home to a host of stunning beaches, beautiful clear water and spectacular views of the mountains. Perhaps a little less famous than Como and Garda, Maggiore straddles the Swiss-Italian border and is surrounded by numerous sites to park up your caravan. It’s also not too far from Como and Milan!
Black Forest, Germany
If woodland trekking is your thing, look no further than the Black Forest. A monstrous 6,009 km² area of trees in the south-west corner of Germany, the Black Forest is a splendid natural location. Mountains, seemingly endless woods, a smattering of lakes and pristine German villages; you won’t be short of different settings in which to spend the night. And be sure to sample some real Black Forest gateau, or Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, as the locals know it.
Fancy a serious road trip? Well, Croatia might just be the perfect place to target. Depending on your route, you could drive through up to eight countries! When you get to Pula in west Croatia, you’ll be greeted by a grand Roman amphitheatre, which is among the six largest remaining anywhere in the world, plus the glistening Adriatic Sea. The crystalline water is perfect for snorkelling, and you’ll find a host of caravan sites all around the peninsula, so you’ll never be far from the water, or the sun!
South-west France has something to please most. Presuming you go at the right time of year, you’ll get plenty of sun, sea, sand and surfing, with campsites and caravan parks littering the coast near Biarritz. Added to that, it’s on the edge of the Pyrenees and the Landes de Gascogne national park, so there’ll be plenty of hiking opportunities. And, if you fancy a trip to nearby Spain, you’ll be within easy reach of San Sebastian!
Hallstatt is an incredibly picturesque little town on the shore of the Hallstatter See lake. It’s so aesthetically pleasing that the Chinese even built a replica of it in 2012! The alpine architecture is typically quaint, while a funicular connects Hallstatt to an ancient salt mine within the steep hill the town is built on the edge of. The mine also houses an impressive subterranean lake! So, if you’re keen for a bit of history combined with landscapes containing lakes and mountains, this area of Austria might just be want you’re after.
Fancy a caravan holiday that allows you to drive through eight (or more!) countries? That’s a kind of freedom you just don’t get with other trips. At the Insurance Emporium, we allow you to make the most of that freedom with 200 days of European Use as standard! Whether you spread that over several voyages or take one mammoth caravan trip, it’ll certainly give you plenty of options!
