FEELIN’ HOT HOT HOT: HOW SPICY DOES THE UK LIKE ITS FOOD?

The nation’s love affair with a ‘cheeky’ Nandos is no secret, with the purveyors of peri-peri becoming as much a part of British cuisine as a Sunday dinner! Last year we asked you to vote for your preferred spice level; so are we a nation of mouth-melting maniacs or spice-shunning softies? Here are the results of our survey!

Extra hot – 8.5%

8.5% of the people who entered our survey were brave enough to choose extra hot. For those who love to feel the burn, they might get their fix from The Carolina Reaper. The hottest pepper in the world comes in at 2.2 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU)! We’d seriously warn anyone to be very careful around these bad boys!

Hot – 25.2%

For the 25.2% of you who like their food hot but don’t fancy a trip to A&E, there is another option that’ll still get you sweating! The Bhut Jolokia, or Ghost Pepper, is famous for being the first pepper to ever test over 1 million SHU. Don’t be fooled though, this pepper might not be a Reaper but it could have ‘grim’ results!

Medium – 41.9%

An overwhelming majority of people chose medium as the perfect spice level for them. The humble jalapeno pepper could be perfect for those lovers of medium spiced food, with around 8,000 SHU per pepper. It might give you a little zing but you won’t be sticking your head in the freezer after this one!

Mild – 16.9%

16.9% of the people who answered our survey would choose a mild dish. If you want your food with only a smallest hint of spice, the Espanola chili pepper could be the one for you. Coming in at around 1,500 SHU per pepper, it’s sweet and smoky but could add just the slightest kick.

Extra mild – 7.4%

For some people, even the merest of introductions to a spice can be too much! If you’re like the 7.4% of people who said that extra mild was the only way to eat, the best option in the event that you eat something spicy might be a nice glass of milk. Casein, the protein in milk, is known to break down the bonds that capsaicin forms on nerve receptors and help to reduce the pain.
