Pizza makes a fantastic meal! Whether you’re craving a takeaway after a big night out, you need some comfort food to help deal with exam stress, you fancy a treat after a long bike ride or you’re just making dinner, pizza is great! But which is the best topping? That’s what we asked in our national survey. Check out our infographic to see what the public thinks is the best pizza topping and to find out some interesting facts about them…
The most popular topping in our survey was the Meat Feast, with 27.2% of entrants voting for it. This protein-rich pizza traditionally contains a mixture of pork and beef but recipes do vary depending on where you get it from. Some pizza chefs also like to include chicken, while others feel the feast is not complete without some vegetables. For those who don’t eat animal products, various online food bloggers have created recipes for a vegan version of the meat feast too!
For 18.1% of voters, pizza is best with a selection of vegetables on top. Veggie toppings can make pizza a little healthier too! Pizzas tend to contain less saturated fat when there is no meat on them and vegetables contain a range of healthy vitamins. Nevertheless, we still wouldn’t recommend a vegetable-topped pizza if you’re on a diet!
Sometimes, a simple cheese and tomato topping is all you need and that’s why 20.3% picked Margherita as their favourite. This was also the choice used on the world’s longest pizza. Made in the United States in June 2017, the pizza was over 1.9km long and was topped with 5,000lbs of tomato sauce and 3,900lbs of mozzarella cheese!
For 10.5% of voters, a tuna and sweetcorn topping was the favourite. Tuna pizza is also one of the most popular toppings in Germany, where it is known as ‘thunfisch pizza’. A thunfisch pizza can include a range of other toppings, such as sweetcorn, or it can simply have tuna, cheese and tomato sauce.
The classic American topping was voted the favourite by 23.9% of entrants. Pepperoni was also the chosen topping for the world’s highest altitude pizza delivery on land. Setting the world record, a pepperoni pizza was delivered up 5,895m to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro!
The Hawaiian Controversy
You may have seen it on social media and internet forums: the great controversy over whether or not pineapple goes on pizza. With each side holding strong views about whether pineapple is an acceptable topping, we wondered whether this was a war we wanted to be involved in. We decided not. That’s why Hawaiian wasn’t included in our results!
