The Tour de France is arguably the most exciting event of the year for cyclists around the world! This year, the race covers a total of 3,460km, and features five mountain-top finishes – great news for climbers! The Grand Départ is set in Brussels this year in honour of the 5th anniversary of Eddy Merckx’s first Tour de France win. They’re also celebrating 100 years of the maillot jaune, the coveted yellow jersey! There’s a lot on the line for some of the top names this year. Which is why we’ve put together our guide of riders to look out for!
After an impressive stage 1 victory at the Tour of California, Peter Sagan managed to take third place at the event. The three-time Slovak world champion’s looking to take a record-equalling sixth green points jersey at the Tour de France this year. He’s proven himself to be quite the climber in the past, so he’s sure to be a sprinter to look out for in the 2019 race!
The Tour de France hasn’t had a French winner since 1985, when Bernard Hinault took home the maillot jaune. This year, Romain Bardet wants to change that! The five mountain-top finishes and the amount of attacking that’s going to be needed this time around suits Bardet’s style. He also didn’t take part in the Giro d’Italia to focus on the Tour. This could be the year the French take back the title!
Last year didn’t quite go as planned for Adam Yates, but he’s back with a vengeance for the Tour de France 2019! Coming 4th in the general classification of the Tour in 2016, Yates won the white jersey for best-placed rider under 26, proving he can ride with some of the best. The young rider is aiming for a podium finish this year, and has made the Tour 2019’s top priority!
Part of a trio of team Movistar leaders for this year’s Tour de France, Nairo Quintana will be aiming for a place on the podium! The team have already seen success this year, claiming a win at the Giro d’Italia, and Quintana himself has placed second in Paris-Nice. As one of the strongest climbers in cycling and with a big focus on the event, Nairo Quintana could be set to take the yellow jersey at Tour de France 2019.
Last year’s Tour de France winner, Geraint Thomas has plenty to fight for to hold onto his title! The Welsh racing cyclist passed on the chance to compete in the Giro d’Italia this year to focus 100% on the Tour de France. Earlier in the year, he insisted that as long as either he or Froome win the Tour he’ll be happy. But with Froome out of the race due to injury, Thomas will be shooting for a second consecutive Tour de France win!
