Taking a break every once in a while is essential, and helps relieve the stress of everyday life. What better way to take a break than going on holiday! Sadly however, going away doesn’t take away all your responsibilities, especially if you own a pet. At The Insurance Emporium, we want you to have a great time away, with peace of mind that your furry friends are being well looked after. That’s why we’ve put together our handy guide of what to do with your pet when you’re going on holiday!

Dog Kennels or Catteries

Pet boarding services, like dog kennels or catteries, can be a great solution for looking after your pet while you’re away. Whether you’ve got a dog or a cat, ensure the establishment is licensed under the new laws, which changed in October 2018. You’ll also want to make sure it’s hygienic, your pet has access to their own sleeping areas and receives regular exercise. Make sure they’ve been vaccinated too, so they don’t pick up any nasty surprises! Check out the RSPCA’s guide on choosing a boarding kennel for your dog.

Are your family or friends animal lovers? You could send your pet on a holiday of their own! Sending your pet to stay with somebody you know can provide them with a similar environment to what they’re used to, with regular attention and freedom to move about the home. Keep in mind, looking after a pet is a big responsibility, and you’ll want to make sure your friends or family know what they’re getting themselves into! This can be difficult for cats as well, as they’re very territorial, and will have to adjust to their new environment.

Home Alone

If you don’t have friends or family willing to welcome your furry friend into their home, maybe you’ll be able to find somebody to look after your pet in your home! This could even have the added benefit of ensuring your home remains secure while you’re away. Your pets, especially cats, will be more comfortable in their own environment, and they can keep to their regular daily routine. Just make sure you trust your house sitter!

Online Apps

Certain apps and websites, like Pawshake, connect you with local dog walkers and dog sitters in your area who might be able to look after your pet while you’re away. Again, you’ll need to make sure you trust the person looking after your pet, especially if they’ll have access to your home. Meet them face to face if possible, and look at any reviews you can find. Otherwise, this is a convenient way of making sure your pets are looked after while you’re away!

Doggy Holiday!

Another option is to take your dog with you! Staycations are increasingly popular in the UK, and there are some great places to take dogs up and down the country! Just make sure where you’re staying is pet-friendly, and let them know you’re bringing your furry friend beforehand. Read more about taking your dog away in our 5 Tips On Travelling With Your Dog!
